Maintenance is not for the faint of heart! The pandemic-related exceptional situation of the last two years has contributed to a technological and organizational upheaval in many companies that would not have been conceivable before.
Efficient web meetings, linking real-time data from system sensors and condition monitoring, use of diagnostics and simulation software to optimize production programs and maintenance measures (predictive maintenance), the use of auto-ID and remote technologies as well as mobile devices and data glasses. These are just a few examples of how maintenance, among other things, had to learn to manage day-to-day business under changed conditions and with fewer personnel resources in order to ensure system availability and reliability. And no sooner had the biggest challenges seemed to be overcome than new, sometimes even more serious issues emerged as a result of the war in Ukraine, such as destroyed supply chains and exorbitant raw material prices.
It is important to actively address these “exceptional situations” and to consolidate the resulting technical and organizational changes. Especially against the background of the increasingly obvious shortage of skilled workers. This has been discussed for years, but sustainable countermeasures to eliminate resource and skills bottlenecks have hardly been taken.
