Adding value through smart maintenance
Smart maintenance is data-based management of production systems using new technologies. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Heller, head of the plant and service management department at Fraunhofer IML in Dortmund, explains: “An important component of the smart factory is the so-called digital twin, the digital image of the production plant in a computer system that enables comprehensive data exchange between the plant and the IT system. For smart maintenance, this offers the possibility of predicting certain events in advance and reacting to them accordingly. Ideally, there is a platform with a database on which you can simulate different scenarios and then adapt production accordingly in order to optimally fulfill customer orders.”
